The highlight of the Baffin Island coast was a polar bear we spotted sleeping on the sea ice. This coastline is a critical habitat for polar bears, which depend on sea ice for hunting seals. For a long time, we watched as the bear, perhaps mistaking our ship for an iceberg, gazed back at us. When we first saw the bear, it was apparently sleeping, then he roused himself, took a look at the ship, dug into the ice and went back to sleep.
