The ship was a perfect vehicle to observe the constantly changing landscape. As we moved along, the angle of the view changed, new objects came into focus and old ones disappeared (likely forever from my sight). The intensity of the light varied with the passing clouds.
Dramatic islands, mountains and cliffs rose from the sea. The upheaval of hot sulfuric acid cause rocks to burn and smoke at Smoking Hills. Gorgeous valleys of lush green, yellow and read opened to buttressed rock escarpments. Rocky island peaks were home to numerous nesting birds.
